At 0430 hours on January 15, 1942, the moon had already set, leaving the world without shadows. The 12-man crew of blimp K-3 , Airship Patrol Squadron 12, left the makeshift operations room at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, in New Jersey, and climbed up the narrow ladder into the blimp’s gondola, commonly known as the “car.”
